What is septic tank accidental damage?

Accidental damage is a section of a buildings insurance policy that covers you for - well - accidental damage to your home! Most people think this would only relate to something like a smashed window or damaged sink, but it is also the section under which you would be covered for septic tank problems caused by damage to your property’s septic tank. This section specifically is called 'accidental damage to underground services', and it is this part of your policy that would typically cover you for problems affecting your septic tank due to damage caused by things such as tree roots, vehicle or ground movement.

How do you know if you are covered for septic tank accidental damage?

Previously, nearly all buildings insurance policies came with accidental damage (including to underground services) as standard. However, recently there has been a growing trend for insurers to sell policies in which accidental damage is sold as an 'extra' above and beyond a standard policy. This is leaving many people without this essential cover, in the instance that their septic tank or sewage treatment plant is damaged and needs to be repaired or replaced. As the costs of these works can often run to thousands of pounds, this can be a real problem when people are faced with covering these costs themselves. There are also a lot of low cost policies flooding the market which are becoming very popular, and for good reason - but tread carefully, as often with insurance you do get what you pay for. If the premium price seems too good to be true, it probably is!

Often, this additional accidental damage cover can be added to a policy for only a few pounds. We deal with some customers who have bought a policy which doesn’t have this cover without even realising, so please make sure that you check the details of any buildings insurance policy that you purchase. If you can afford to do so, take that extra accidental damage cover if your insurer doesn't offer it as standard, it may save you thousands of pounds if you ever suffer damage to your property’s drainage system!
