Luckily for most of us, extreme flooding is not very common, however, given recent events in the north of the UK it’s important to familiarise yourself with the steps to take to best deal with these unforeseen events.

Flooding causes devastating damage inside and outside your home.

Take a look at the following helpful practical advice here to help you prepare for the floods.

If you have a septic tank, cesspit or sewage treatment plant there is a good chance that flooding will cause problems.

Our technical manager Rick Jeeves would advise following these steps if you suffer a flood and have an off mains drainage system:

  • Don’t empty your septic tank or sewage treatment plant – If the ground surrounding the tank has a high water table, this will create pressure and cause an empty tank to lift out of the ground!
  • Get your system checked by a specialist contractor – sewage treatment plants have electrical elements which can become water damaged, to avoid harm turn off electrics to the system and get them checked by a specialist.
  • Reduce usage as much as possible – this will prevent excess waste water escaping into the ground surrounding your drainage system

If your tank has moved position, risen out of the ground or is requiring emptying more frequently following a flood then contact the team on 01628 788600 for an inspection, and we will advise whether the damage is covered under your home insurance policy.
